Data Communication

Data communication refers to the exchange of data between a source and a receiver via a form of transmission media such as a wire cable and wireless(air). Data communication is said to be local if communicating devices are in the same building or a similarly restricted geographical area.
Electronic communications, like email and instant messages, as well as digital phone calls, are examples of data communications. Thus Data communication is the transmission of electronic data and information between two points, either via an analog (electrical) signal or a digital (binary) signal.

Elements of Data Communication
There are four basic elements in any data communication system.

  1. Sender: The person, computer, or any device that is used for sending data is called the sender, source, or transmitter. in the modern, a computer is usually used as a source in a digital communication system.
  2. Medium: The medium through which data flows from one location to another is called the transmission medium. Wired or wireless mediums are used to connect the receiver and sender.
  3. Receiver: The device or computer that receives the data is called a receiver. The receiver can be a computer, printer, or fax machine.
  4. Protocols: There are sets, rules, and formats under which data transmission takes place between sender and receiver. Data communication software is used to transfer data from one computer to another. The software that follows the same communication protocols can communicate and exchange data.
