Mode of Data Transmission

The way in which data is transmitted from one location to another location is called Data Communication. There are three ways or modes for transmitting data from one location to another. These are

  1. Simplex Mode: in Simplex mode data is transmitted in only one direction on the data communication medium. A terminal can only send data but cannot receive it or it can only receive data but cannot send it. An example of simplex transmission is Radio and Television broadcasts in which the signal is sent from the transmission to the TV antenna. it is the cheapest communication method.
  2. Duplex Mode: The communication mode in which communication takes place in both directions. In this mode receiver is not a passive receiver who can respond to the sender. A device can send and receive the data signal at the same time. there are two types of Duplex Mode
      1.  Half Duplex Mode: in this mode data can be transmitted in both directions but only in one direction at a time. During any transmission, one is the transmitter and another is the receiver. This is the most common type of transmission for computers over the telephone network because only one person is supposed to speak at a time. It is also used to connect the terminal to a computer. Fax transfer is another example of a half-duplex communication mode. Another example of half-duplex communication is Willkie-talkie communication.
      2. Full duplex mode: In this mode, data can be transmitted in both directions simultaneously. It is a faster mode for transmitting data because there is no time wasted in switching directions. An example of a Full Duplex is a Telephone Network in which there is communication between two persons by a telephone line, using which both can talk and listen at the same time. The mobile phone we use is an example of full-duplex mode where we can communicate simultaneously
